The Windows Registry contains millions of “keys” which are binary code instructions for the operation of the computer. Each key is linked in some way to the various component structures of the computer. These instructions are the “super highway” used by the computer to setup the various key parts of the computer so that it works correctly.
In short these “keys” construct the operating system to load the Windows operating system from the time of initial switch on to the useable desktop.
At switch on, the registry looks at the hardware and the drivers required to run the hardware, followed by the software to load the drivers and links to the hardware and software and finally to link the whole package to the program manager that formulates and runs the various programs in use on the computer.
A virus in its most predatory form will infiltrate the registry, manipulate and/or change “keys” within the registry, giving an entirely new and unwanted set of instructions to the registry. This results in the computer behaving erratically, or not at all. In some cases the registry is changed in such a way, the owner/operator knows nothing of the changes, but the pc is giving stored information to a third party via the internet. If you use internet banking or password encrypted files, then these too can be silently rerouted to third party servers to collect sensitive or private information.
It is important to run your pc with a good quality firewall, and anti-virus program. Without these pieces of software in use on your pc, is like giving a complete stranger in the street your bank details.
Getting rid of viruses is not always straightforward. They are written by timewasters who are clever at programming. These programmers often create unavoidable links to their own websites in order that you buy their virus removal software to get rid of the virus they created. It is a licence to print money, but you should not allow yourself to be forced to buy these removal programs. Often as not they don’t remove the virus and the user is left with a useless piece of software that has just cost them around £70.00 or more. However the virus remains on the computer and continues to disrupt the operation of the computer. The most effective ways to remove the virus are to seek the help of a qualified and reputable technician. The cost will be the same as the piece of useless software that you bought.
