So Much to say about these computers, but just read my information, it comes from having spent the last four years supplying the parts for these unreliable computers. When I repair them or provide support, it costs nothing apart from the components and it saves you buying a new pc & you don't lose any files either.

How to repair Emachine Advent Medion Packard Bell Compaq and Ei-systems computers.

But what about the computers themselves when they malfunction?

This option replaces the malfunctioning motherboard with a new socket 478 motherboard.

It is easy to fit a new top quality motherboard, using the ebayer's own cpu, memory and restored their existing registered version of windows XP without any data or personal files loss at all.  The whole operation took just 1 hour 50 minutes from start to finish, and cost £85.00 in total. Need more info contact Chris for details or ring 07926-106150.

Note: this is applicable to owners of Medion,Advent, Packard Bell,Compaq, Ei-System computers that are sold from the same location.

Lets go and think about being green when it comes to our computers.

We buy all these computers and when they get old ( after about 3 years! or sooner ) we think about just replacing the pc without any regard for all the data that you have put on it over those years. We also think that " its getting slow, get something faster" but do you ever consider the options fully?? NO

The options to upgrade the innards are more appropriate with a motherboard kit

See my pages for value for money upgrade kits to install a new motherboard with processor, memory and cooling fan. This gets you instant speed and capability, and retains your existing files, priceless picture collection which I bet you have not stored to a cd yet ?? AND it means you don't have the costly expense of buying a new pc or giving your hard drive contents to third world countries to access the information on the drive to use for immoral or illegal purposes. For between £90 and £150 you could install one of my upgrade kits, it will take you under an hour to do. Anyone can do this, just be practical and follow my included detailed instructions. Unless you have hands like shovels or fingers like railway sleepers it is dead easy.

Ask me ? ring me on 07926-106150 for free advice on what i can provide for your computer. Full compatibility service given and telephone help after the upgrade just in case you run into difficulties.

Supply and fit service? if you are in the Surrey/Middx/Berks/Bucks area, contact me for further info. I'll post it anywhere in the UK or other parts of Europe, USA Australia etc I will not post to SPAIN

Emachine Motherboard Blown General symptoms

You have a blown motherboard. The fact that the fan runs and there is no monitor and the orange light remains on standby are all classic symptoms of the failure of the processor socket. There are capacitors along one side of the processor socket which form part of the function of the processor socket. When these fail, the processor socket fails too. In addition to this the pc's power supply often fails because the feed to the processor is the small square plug beside it, with 2 x yellow and 2 x black cables. On this basis some items within the pc can be heard running whilst others are not.

Replacing the power supply and the motherboard ALWAYS sorts this problem out. My experience with these Emachines and similar computers sold through the same retailer networks, including model such as Medion,Advent,Packard Bell,Compaq Ei Systems to name but a few all suffer with the same problem.

Socket 478 motherboards for Emachine Advent Medion computers

Motherboards for Socket 478 Intel based computers are becoming something of a rarity now to buy on the open market. Plenty of ebay sellers sell them including me. Of the ones that are for sale on ebay most are second user ( excluding mine of course, mine are new )

I am always a bit wary of buying a used motherboard for an emachine for example. The motherboards on these computers were never brilliant and their longevity of life has never been very good, all the less reason to replace your motherboard with a used one.

The trouble is there aren't too many places to but these new now, the hardware format has been in the archives for some 4 years now although it is still easy to buy new Intel socket 478 processors.

So what are the choices to revive an Intel socket 478 based pc? As the cases are built to industry standard architecture ( ISA) the choices are wide and plentiful. You could replace the motherboard, cpu, fan.memory by putting in a motherboard bundle kit comprising either an Intel socket 775 or AMD AM2 based motherboard. Both choices are easy to fit for even the most reticent diy'ers. Doing so will revive your pc and give it at least 5 years more life and what's more you will not lose any files or data. Need more help on this subject ? contact me on my telephone number shown above.

Socket 478 motherboard replacements

The guides I send out deal with the change over of a blown motherboard on all Intel & AMD based emachines. All emachines have series identity model numbers starting 170 to 820, the second and last digit are changed to reflect the actual model you have . For example a machine called an 210 is a base unit based on an Intel processor starting at 2.3ghz. When ordering your replacement motherboard be certain to quote the model number in an email to me first to confirm that the PC you have is an Intel based PC. The series 600 numbers are normally AMD based which use a different motherboard. This guide for buying also is good for reference to the Fujitsu Scaleo PC's, Packard Bell,Viglen, HP Pavillion ranges and Advent Pc's bought through the High Street retailers chainstores.

If in doubt email me with the spec and code of your pc first.

Build or upgrade your computer

Ask for my guide to building or upgrading your own computer on my ebay site. You will receive this printed matter as soon as you pay by pay pal and will receive periodic updates by email as long as you provide an up to date email address. This guide deals with all aspects of ..."do I throw my pc away or do I upgrade the one I have". Think green etc, revive your pc by replacing components with newer more up to date items and thus upgrade the speed and capability. Email me via ebay. As a degree qualified computer engineer with some years of hands on practical experience, my advice is good advice and its free.

Its fun to upgrade your own pc. Its easy with some common sense, practical ability, and a cross-head screwdriver. The easiest way to upgrade your pc is to fit one of my motherboard upgrade kits.

The kits come with full change-over instructions, a new motherboard, processor, cooling fan and memory. The kit will be fully configured and requires you to fit the new components as soon as you have cleared the space inside the pc of the old motherboard etc and cleaned all the accumulated dust out of the way. You will be up and running again before you know it and enjoying the new capabilities of your pc at a fraction of the cost of buying a new one.

The history about the ranges of computers shown above.

Did you know? Emachine originates from USA, The company appeared in September 1998, as a joint venture between Korean monitor maker Korea Data Systems (KDS) and Korean computer manufacturer TriGem, who just happen to make the system boards inside these computers. In addition the trademark Advent and Medion both sold through the same high street retailer. Users of the Advent T1 all in one computer will be keen to note that the system they bought, was manufactured  ( see my guide on this pc elsewhere in my ebay guides ) by the Korean based company and expensive as it is, is not easily or economically repaired when the motherboard fails

In 2004 rival Gateway Computers bought Emachine. Gateway was purchased by Acer in October 2007, and eMachines is still used as a brand for low-cost PCs. In addition Ei Systems , a Spanish based company were acquired and their range of computers was also added to the range on offer in the same high street retailers.

Before the company went private in 2001, eMachines' desktop components were generally considered of poor quality. So what has changed then when they say they are now more reliable ? Nothing at all because they are still just as unreliable as they have always been.

So it all ties up really, the same brand name computers which all suffer with the same hardware problems are built on the same chassis, using the same components for sale in the same high street shops.

Market domination with a common product with a common problem. Something wrong here?

July 2008

Applicable to Emachine, Advent, Medion, Packard  Bell, Compaq, Gateway Computers.

Also applies to some HP and Fujitsu computers.

Symptoms of failure, or imminent failure if still running.

Possible symptoms Pre-full failure.

The computer may not boot beyond POST ( Power on Self Test )or the computer may have random shut down and reboots. The computer may not boot to windows but only to Safe Mode.

The computer boot process may go round and round in a “loop” in other words a, the pc will POST but go to the menu that offers a choice of different boot methods. This may include “start windows Normally” or start Windows …. Last good known configuration, or Safe Mode option.

The full motherboard breakdown will be evident if the pc will not come out of the yellow standby light on the screen. The other symptoms here will be the pc may sound as though it is running. This is assuming the power supply has not partially blown. The CPU fan will be seen to be running, the hard drive and cd rom lights will be glowing, and the hard drive can be heard running. The obvious point will be that in these circumstances the pc will show no signs of a display on screen.

What will have happened here is that the motherboard processor socket will have become inoperable. This is a non repairable item, but means the motherboard must be replaced for an effective and full repair.

The cost of this may sound worse that it actually is. The High Street stores will quote you inflated repair figures, when in truth the repair can be carried out by you with my instructions in under and hour and with full effect.

Ask me for more details if the above symptoms match your own computer symptoms.
